Using multilayer coatings in OSLO

Question

I want to model multilayer coatings. Can I model multilayer coatings in OSLO? How do I do it? Can I model multilayer coatings if I just have the transmission or reflection curve? Can I optimize on multilayer coatings in OSLO?

Synopsis

Using multilayer coatings in OSLO

Solution

You can model multilayer coatings and polarization effects in OSLO Premium. The lesser OSLO editions do not support multilayer coatings and polarization analysis. Modeling a multilayer coating in OSLO is a multi-step process:
  • You define coating materials by choosing "Lens>>Coatings>>Update Materials" from the OSLO menu, then
  • You define designs by choosing "Lens>>Coatings>>Update Designs", then
  • You apply previously defined coating designs by choosing "Special>>Multilayer Coating (M)" on the surface of interest. Note that in the "Multilayer Coating Data" dialog box you will find a blank cell for "Multilayer Coating Name". Click the mouse within that cell and you will get a popup list of coatings that have already been defined. Go back to step #2 if you want to see how each of the stored designs is defined. The above-defined method is the only way that interference coatings can be modeled in OSLO. You cannot model a coating by entering data from a transmission or reflection curve. The designs of the coatings are stored in a coating database with the installed OSLO software. The designs themselves are not stored with the individual lenses - only the name of a particular coating design is stored with the lens. This organization makes it difficult to optimize the coating design using OSLO. OSLO is currently not capable of optimizing a coating design. We recommend you use other software products to do that.
