Question

Should I use the OSLO or UltraEdit text editor for CCL?

Synopsis

CCL Editors

Symptoms

UltraEdit is a third party program that has serious professional-level file editing features such as multiple-file editing, extensive searching options and color syntax coding to name a few. This makes it ideal for working with large CCL files. Lambda Research assumes that users of OSLO Standard and Premium may want to do extensive CCL and SCP editing and therefore Lambda pays a licensing fee to the makers of UltraEdit so that we can include a copy of UltraEdit in every copy of OSLO Standard and Premium we sell. The internal OSLO editor is perfectly adequate for editing of small OSLO CCL and SCP files. It is every bit as capable as the Microsoft Notepad program, but it also has the advantage of tight integration with the CCL compiler (which UltraEdit does not). Any time a CCL file is saved to the Private CCL directory when using the internal OSLO editor, OSLO automatically compiles the private CCL files. If you use UltraEdit, you would have to perform the CCL compilation as an additional step.

Solution

If you are editing larger CCL or SCP files, you may find the power of UltraEdit (supplied with OSLO Standard and Premium) will simplify your work. For smaller projects, the internal OSLO editor (supplied with all versions of OSLO) is perfectly adequate and has the advantage of tighter integration with the CCL compiler.
