When applying a Fluorescence Property in TracePro, the Apply Properties dialog requires input values for the following parameters:

Quantum Efficiency Peak Molar Extinction Molar Concentration Where can I get more information about what these values represent?

Synopsis
Apply Properties - Fluorescence - Quantum Efficiency, Peak Molar Extinction, Molar Concentration

Solution

These parameters are applicable to fluids used in the Biomedical industry. For more information, we suggest: Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy by Joseph R. Lakowicz

For a solid material, an assessment of the units for these parameters leads to a straightforward conclusion of what values to enter in TracePro.

  • Quantum Efficiency (no units)
  • Peak Molar Extinction (liters/mole*cm)
  • Molar Concentration (moles/liter)

The units of the product of these 3 values are:

(no units) * (liters/mole*cm) * (moles/liter) = 1/cm

In the TracePro Apply Properties / Fluorescence dialog:

  • enter "1" for Quantum Efficiency
  • enter "1" for Molar Concentration
  • enter an absorption coefficient (units of 1/cm) for the Peak Molar Extinction Coefficient
