New objects are at incorrect locations after File/Merge or Insert/Part

Question

I have tried to combine two files using either File/Merge or Insert/Part, but the new objects are not brought in at the correct locations. What can be done to resolve this?

Synopsis

New objects are at incorrect locations after File/Merge or Insert/Part

Solution

Incorrect locations of objects can occur when two prerequisites are both true: (1) some or all of the objects of the imported file have an orientation of (0, 0, 0), and (2) the two files have different units (e.g. - mm vs inches) Objects that have been imported from a STEP or IGES file have an orientation of (0, 0, 0) [select Edit/Object/Orientation from the TracePro menu]. When such objects are scaled, as is occurring when a file in one set of units is merged or inserted into another set of units, then the position of the scaled object is erroneous.
