Did you know TracePro is an excellent tool for spectrometer design and analysis?
Spectrometers in their most basic form split light into its component wavelengths. This light can then be measured by a single detector to sample the light one wavelength at a time or with a detector array to sample the full spectrum with a single measurement. Some examples are a Crossed Czerny-Turner spectrometer, a concave holographic grating spectrometer, an imaging spectrometer, and a scanning monochromator. All of these spectrometer types and more can be modeled, designed, analyzed, and optimized in TracePro.

In most designs a grating is used to split the light into the component wavelengths, but other options, such as prisms, can also be used. The grating can be reflective or transmissive. Gratings can also be ruled or holographic.

In TracePro the spectrometer can be built using the tools in TracePro, or imported from a lens design program such as OSLO, or similar programs. The mechanical parts of the spectrometer such as the case, cover, and optical component mounts can also be built in TracePro or imported from a CAD program using the native CAD file formats.

Once the spectrometer model is in TracePro, properties from the extensive TracePro property database can be applied such as mirror coatings, black surface finishes, grating properties, and lens coatings. The light sources can also be defined.

The full suite of analysis tools can then be used to determine the performance of the spectrometer. One key metric in spectrometers is stray light. Stray light is unwanted light that can degrade the performance of the spectrometer. The Irradiance/Illuminance Plot as well as the Ray and Path Sorting tools can be used to identify and mitigate stray light sources and paths.

Once the design is finished, the model can be exported from TracePro as a STEP, IGES, or SAT file that can then be sent off for manufacturing.

TracePro has the tools and capabilities needed for successfully designing, modeling, and analyzing spectrometers.
