I would like a good eye model that I can use in OSLO. One with enough precision that it actually models the gradient material in the lens. Do you have anything like this?

Solution

There are some good eye models in Bruce Walker's book "Optical Design for Visual Systems). We have many of the examples from this book on our site this web page. Many of these examples can even be opened in the free version of OSLO, OSLO-EDU. But I'm not sure if any of them are modeled using Gradient Index (GRIN) materials. Hwey-Lan Liou and Noel A. Brennan wrote a good paper entitled, "Anatomically accurate, finite model eye for optical modeling," in JOSA A Vol. 14, No. 8, 1997, pp. 1684-1695. A lens file named EyeModel_LB.len based on this paper is available in OSLO by selecting File/Open Lens/Public/Demo/Light/. This "New Schematic Eye" is set up for evaluation in monochromatic light at 555nm, 486.1nm(F) and 656.3nm(C). Note that the dispersion information provided in the paper has been incorporated into the models. The different models provided have some extra "dummy" surfaces so that the regions of fluid will look "solid" in layout views of the lenses. Axial-Radial Gradient index surface types are not available in OSLO-EDU
