Multilayer information the designer needs to enter into OSLO

Question

I am trying to design multilayer structure LEDs and photodetectors which consist of various epitaxial films. Can I design an optical multilayer structure with OSLO Premium? How about the refractive indices of different materials? Do we have to find them or does your program have its own database of some materials? Do you have the refractive indices data of different materials like BN, GaN, InGaN, and AlGaN, according to thicknesses in your software? What kind of materials' refractive indices are included in your software?

Synopsis

Multilayer information the designer needs to enter into OSLO

Solution

"The Premium version of OSLO does have support for modeling multilayer coatings, however, it is not recommended that OSLO be used to design multilayer coatings. There are other products in the marketplace that do a better job with multilayer coatings design. OSLO has a limited database of candidate coating materials. In order to model coatings accurately, designers need to get the correct refractive indices from the coating shop that will be performing the work. You can enter coating designs with layers of varying thicknesses. For each design, you can choose one of 4 ""units of measure"" for the thicknesses of the included layers:
  1. Quarter wave optical thickness
  2. Full-wave optical thickness
  3. Micrometers (physical thicknesses)
  4. Micrometers (optical thicknesses)
Then for each layer, you can specify
  1. Thickness, and
  2. Material
or
  1. Thickness, and
  2. Refractive index, and
  3. Extinction coefficient
When you define custom materials, for each wavelength you can define
  1. Refractive index, and
  2. Extinction coefficient
